Our Pastor

Rev. Dr. Carrington Darrell Carter

Rev. Dr. Carrington D. Carter, the last living of four brothers, was born on September 7, 1957 in Baltimore, Md., to the late Mrs. Lina Mae Everett and the late Mr. Elbert C. Carter.

Rev. Carter is a graduate of the Baltimore City Public Schools. He furthered his education by earning the Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Morgan State University in May, 1978, and is a member of Phi Sigma Tau Honor Society in Philosophy. In May, 1982, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC, with a double major in Old Testament studies and Systematic Theology. On May 20, 1995, Rev. earned the Doctor of Ministry degree as a Samuel D. Proctor-Charles E. Booth Fellow at United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, with a focus in Biblical Preaching, New Testament, and Black Church studies. He is the author of his Doctoral Dissertation, The Pentecost Narrative in the Book of Acts As a Foundation for Christian Discipleship in the Local African Methodist Episcopal Church (Copyright, 1995).

Rev. Carter was converted in 1970 and was called to preach and entered the Christian Ministry in April, 1974 out of Allen A.M.E. Church, Baltimore, Md. In April, 1977, Rev. Carter was ordained an Itinerant Deacon and in April, 1978, was ordained an Itinerant Elder, both in the Washington Annual Conference of the A.M.E. Church. Also, at the 1978 session of the Washington Annual Conference, Rev. Carter was appointed Pastor to his first Church. From April, 1978 to June, 1984, Rev. Carter, pastored in the Washington Annual Conference.

In June, 1984, Rev. Carter was transferred to the Western North Carolina Annual Conference, where he pastored for 13 years. On June 1, 1997, at the setting of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference, Rev. Carter was transferred back to the Washington Annual Conference and appointed the Pastor of Seaton Memorial A.M.E. Church, Lanham, Md. (1997- 2001); St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Washington, D.C. (2001-2008); Mt. Moriah AME Church, Annapolis, Md. (2008-2020); Embry AME Church, College Park (July, 2020-July, 2022; Falls Road AME Church, Windsor Mill, Md. (July 14, 2022-May 6, 2023); and at the 73rd Session of the Washington Annual Conference, he was appointed Pastor of Brown Memorial AME Church, Washington, DC.

Since 1992, he has served as Delegate and Alternate Delegate to the A.M.E. Church General Conferences; a former faculty member at Winston-Salem State University and Reid Temple Bible College (teaching 2 semesters of Old and New Testament); A.M.E. Delegate to the North Carolina Council of Churches; Commissioner on the Winston-Salem, North Carolina Human Relations Commission; and Recording Secretary for The AME Ministerial Alliance of Washington, D.C.

At present, he is a member of the Washington Conference Board of Examiners; Instructor in the 4th Year Preaching Clinic Class and Chairperson of the 4th Year Class of Studies (Itinerant Elder’s Ordination) of A.M.E. Ministerial students; a member of the Dissertation Examining Committee of Doctoral students at United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio; and Chairperson of the 2nd Episcopal District Theological Scholarship Committee; and recently in October and November 2024, Dr. Carter taught a 4 week graded course on “The Sacraments and Liturgy of the AME Church” to lay persons through the Life-Long Learning Program of Payne Theological Seminary and Reid Temple AME Church (Glenn Dale, Md.).

A widower after 35 years of marriage to his wife, Mrs. Vernadine Hart Carter, who died of cancer on July 24, 2016, they are the proud parents of Byron Andrew Carter (36 yrs.), a musician

  

and chef, living in Greensboro, NC; and Brittany Tekoa Carter (34 yrs), a Prince George’s County Public Schools Music teacher, as well as a State Certified Music Therapist, with a focus in Music Therapy to senior citizens; and a grandson Robin.
